A GMO crop is a crop that has acquired a new genetic trait from a species other than itself in a way that does not occur/ may not occur through natural mating (conventional breeding). The crop’s new trait may enable for production of the crop in an organic system. For instance, since the Bt genes confer insect resistance to crops, the crops are self protecting against menacing pests, enabling the production of the crop without the need for insecticide sprays.
