Answer

GMO and gene editing

What is the difference between GMO and gene editing? Can these terms be used interchangeably?

Feedback / Answer

While both are new breeding methods (NBTs), the difference is in the final product. In GMOs, a new gene will have been introduced from a different species to confer a specified trait. For genome editing, the product may not have a new gene introduced, however, the change will be made possible through an induced mutation. The two terms can not be used interchangeably.
