Ageism

There is this concept of “ageism” whereby women are being discriminated according to age. You see scholarship adverts or funding/grant applications which specify a “cut-off” age in the eligibility criteria. Most of us women are disadvantaged because some of us enter into the higher education sector late in life due to life and familial commitments. How then should we handle such situations? Its really frustrating because an individual qualifies in all instances except age. What can be done?

Feedback / Answer

To resolve ageism in careers and education, especially for women juggling caregiving, we must champion advocacy and policy reforms. Promoting inclusive criteria that value diverse life paths ensures fairness. Strategic policy engagements, proactive advocacy, and sensitizing funders on equity principles can dismantle ageist barriers, enabling late learners to thrive without discrimination based on age or life circumstances.
