A genetically modified (GM) crop is a crop variety that has received a new genetic material (DNA) from another organism, usually of another species. The transfer of this novel (new) gene is usually done to an already preferred variety, usually a hybrid. The new gene usually expressed in the donor organism cannot be passed to the crop by natural mating. An example is Bt cotton, which has received the insecticidal protein (Cry1a/b) gene from Bacillus thuringiensis, a very common soil bacteria.
