Some lobby groups are vehemently opposing use of agrochemicals in Kenya. What impact does such a ban have on the country’s agriculture?
Agrochemicals in their different forms are developed to tackle specific agricultural challenges which range from menacing pests, noxious weeds to bacterial and fungal diseases. The chemicals mode of action and active ingredients are important inherent attributes to their efficiency in use, but also to toxicity to humans and the environment. Some chemicals, and on a case by case basis have therefore been withdrawn from markets following toxicity studies. A blanket ban would be defeatist.
